Birdwatching is one of the top things that tourists aim to experience in Bulgaria. With their 393 bird species, they also own the title of biggest European colony. It’s no surprise that it’s seen as a birding paradise. English speaking guides are available for the numerous birdwatching spots and if you’re lucky you can spot a rare species, you can also go bear watching if you wish.

Never miss historic sites like the Buzludzha, a historic tower found atop the Central Balkan Mountains. Built by the Bulgarian communists during 1891, it fulfilled the role of a meeting place. It stood witness to the organized socialist movement and was the venue for the final battle between Bulgarian rebels and the Ottoman Empire. Buzludzha was never restored, its abandoned state only adds more to the surreal experience. This UFO shaped building is filled with anti-communist graffiti and murals depicting the Bulgarian communists.

The top tourist attraction, the most important gem of them all is The Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila more famously known as Rila Monastery. Out of all the Eastern Orthodox monastery, it is the largest and most well-known throughout Bulgaria. If you’re itching for a lot more adventure, then you can hike the seventh highest mountain in Bulgaria, the Golyam Perelik of Rhodope Mountain. There are a lot of other peeks to choose from and you can get guides or even experience a safe self-guided hike. Remember to take in the surroundings, nature and sample the fresh foods available alongside its extremely hospitable people.
