Famous UK Movie Locations

If you are from the United Kingdom, some movies might have given you a feeling of dejavu that you have already been there. Well, that’s because there are scenes of certain movies that have been shot in UK locations. Here are five famous British attractions used in the movies:

  1. Mentmore Towers

This 19th century Buckinghamshire country house may have housed some of the popular names in British nobility but in the movies it has played host to some of the far more disreputable big screen characters.

It has been used to stand in for Wayne Manor, the home of Bruce Wayne, aka Batman. It also appeared in movies like Eyes Wide Shut in 1999, Brazil in 1985, The Mummy Returns in 2001, Ali G Indahouse in 2002, and Batman Begins in 2005.

  1. Betchworth Quarry

The white cliffs of this quarry have become an excellent backdrop in both the big screen and television. It was the location for a chase scene in the classic 70s horror movie Scream and Scream Again and was also featured in episodes of Doctor Who. Today, the Betchworth Quarry is nothing but a rubbish landfill but the cliff can still be reached via the North Downs Way.

  1. Durham Cathedral

The cathedral is perhaps the closest experience you can have of Hogwarts, the magical school of Harry Potter. The cloisters of the Durham Cathedral was transformed into Hogwart’s quadrangle, where some of the most important encounters of Harry took place. It was also used as the Palace of Westminster in the 1998 movie Elizabeth starring Cate Blanchett

  1. Charlestown Harbour

This picturesque village in Cornish sets the stage for Alice to finally begin sailing in Tim Burton’s remake of the classic Alice in Wonderland. Charlestown Harbour was also used as a stand-in for Alderney in the classic war film The Eagle has Landed.

  1. Burrow Head

The second southernmost point in Scotland, Burrow Head served as the location of one of the most iconic scenes in film history. In the 1973 horror movie The Wicker Man, this is where Edward Woodward has finally tracked down the missing schoolgirl.
