The First Capital of the United States: Old City, Philadelphia

Destinations/North America
The First Capital of the United States: Old City, Philadelphia

There is more to Philadelphia than just cheesesteaks and soft pretzels. It is America’s first capital and the birthplace of American freedom. Although sometimes hidden in the shadows of New York and Washington D.C., Philadelphia is one of the greatest cities in the United States and should never be overlooked. Filled with art, culture, and history, the City of Brotherly Love is broken down into several different neighborhoods. One of the most vibrant parts of the city would have to be Old City. It houses the historical monuments and buildings, including: Independence Hall, Christ Church, and the Liberty Bell. All of these are free to the public, and shed light on over 200 years of American history. Old City is found between Center City and Penn’s Landing. The area is easily accessible by using the Market Street Subway Line, or it is a nice ten-block walk from City Hall. After standing in the same room where the Declaration of Independence was signed and walking the pews of the same church America’s Founding Fathers attended, you will probably be hungry and in need for a meal. If this is the case and you are interested in some true local flavor, then […]

A Parisian Winter: Walking Through Christmas on the Champs-Élysées

Destinations/Europe
A Parisian Winter: Walking Through Christmas on the Champs-Élysées

The Avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris, France is one of most highly recognized streets in the City of Light, if not the world. Stretching from the Arc de Triumph down to Place de la Concorde, Champs-Élysées is lined with shops, expensive real estate, cafes, and true Parisian architecture. On sunny days, the sun seems to be shining extra bright as it reflects off the old light fixtures and the large display windows of fancy boutiques; at the night, Champs-Élysées shines from the racing car headlights and the glow from those very same vintage lights the sun reflected off of earlier. To make this scene even more beautiful and storybook-like, you must experience the Avenue des Champs-Élysées during the winter holiday months. From late November to early January, the avenue is completely transformed into a winter wonderland. Walking from Place de la Concorde up to the first roundabout, you will find that Christmas has completely taken over this stretch of the avenue, as well as all of your senses. The Christmas Market on the Champs-Élysées is truly one of the best in the city. Not only are you walking on one of the grandest places on earth, but the market is […]

Taking On the Niagara Falls: USA vs. Canada

Niagara Falls is the joining tourist destination on the international border of Canada and the United States. There are a total of three waterfalls, which make up the entire gathering. Those three include: Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. On either side there is so much to do and see, making the falls a wonderful travel destination for any traveller. There is always talk about which side of the falls is better: the U.S. side or the Canadian side. While it is difficult to decide until you visit, here is a break down for both sides of the amazing Niagara Falls. United States: Some people will point out that they do not like seeing all the background buildings on the Canada side, as it takes away from the natural beauty of the falls; others will also note that there is not as good of an overall view of all the falls on the American side. However, there are a lot of activities and tours on the U.S. side that you can be a part of. There is the ‘Cave of the Winds,’ which really submerges you in to the falls. Once taking a quick elevator ride to the […]

Discovering the Island of Batanes, Philippines ~ My Sanctuary

Discovering the Island of Batanes, Philippines ~ My Sanctuary

I’ve been anticipating my plan to go to Batanes last December 2013, but my flights have been canceled twice, so I have to go for another airlines which is Philippine Airlines. Travelling to Batanes has been tagged as really expensive, well that’s partly true. To tour Batanes the cheapest way, you have to wait for Airline Seatsale! Since I cannot wait anymore, I booked my flight despite its high price. I intend to unwind in Batanes, so this time, I availed of Full Board Package at Batanes Seaside Lodge instead of doing in on my own. My package details can be found here. Since I am travelling solo, I pay P16,000. I also made a request to take a motorbike instead of Van. Even if you do it on your own, it will still cost you much. You would need to hire a tourguide, or a car, since there isn’t always PUV passing by. I think you have to hire a tricycle or rent a bike. I arrived in Batanes 8am via PAL Express. FREEZING COLD! A guy from Batanes Seaside lodge fetched me ( I forgot his name!) I love my room! It’s facing the beach, and there’s also […]
